  17. <p>     For more than a century, the Custer Battlefield National
  18. Monument in southeastern Montana has served as a memorial to the
  19. "Last Stand," in which Lieut. Colonel George Armstrong Custer
  20. and more than 250 men of the 7th U.S. Cavalry met their death
  21. in a fierce battle with Sioux and Cheyenne warriors on June 25,
  22. 1876. Last week Congress approved a bill to rename the park the
  23. Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument. The bill would
  24. also create an Indian memorial there, in recognition that
  25. Native Americans too fought and died in the clash, which was
  26. their last major victory against the U.S. Army.
